Today we took Charlie on her first geocaching expedition. We went to the Gully at Dimple Dell which is about five miles away from our house, and somewhere where we haven't been geocaching before. We printed out details and off we went.
Geocaching is thirsty work so the first thing we did was visit the Daily Brews coffee house, which welcomes canine guests, for coffee and a muffin. Charlie was very good, and we were impressed. (She is not so good at Petco where she always manages to leave her calling card.)
Finally we were ready for the main event. We loaded the coordinates for the first cache -Bird is The Word - into the GPSr and followed the compass. We parked the car when we got close and then continued on foot along a trail that is a dry river bed. Edward was the one to find the cache, which was an ammo can containing bird related items. You can see our log under "ferryfax" to see if we traded anything.
While we were setting up for the second cache - Out of the Nest - a guy with a dog passed us and warned us that coyote had tried to attack his dog further along on the path a couple of days before. We did discover some freshly stripped leg bones on the path, have no idea what species, but I don't think they were proportioned right to be human or dog! We did not see any coyote.
We found the cache quite easily although it was small.
The third cache was Grandma's Kitchen Magnets - guess what that one had in it? That took us on a big loop that brought us back to the car, and Gary took this picture of the rest of us with our beautiful Wasatch mountains in the background.
We got back in the car and set up for our final cache of the day, "B" is for BIG, which was in the parking lot of a big store. It was hidden in a very clever way and it took us a while, but Gary found it eventually.
Charlie had a fantastic time with lots of interesting smells to investigate- it's a horse trail so I will leave it to your imaginations to work out what she found most fascinating. She is currently fast asleep in her bed no doubt dreaming of her adventure.
I guess we will be watching the Oscars tonight as their isn't anything else on.
